What if Blizzard was like Zynga?

Farmville. CityVille. Café World. What do these titles have in common? They are all primarily facebook based games made by Zynga. They also all use the same primary basis for how the company makes money off users, and how they keep people playing. I have heard a few people say that Blizzard, with Mists of Pandaria, is more and more becoming ‘Zynga-ish’ in it’s design and goals. While I can’t speak for Blizzard’s design or it’s goals, I do want to compare the finished product.

Review: Dawn of the Aspects, Part 2

I want to thank Blizzard for sending me a review copy of the second part of Dawn of the Aspects by Richard A Knaak.

We now have the second part of the Dawn of the Aspects ebook, which began in part 1 by introducing us to four of the proto-dragons that would one day become the Aspects of the four of the five dragon flights, Alexstrasza, Ysera, Neltharion, and Malygos. The story is told through memories of the late blue Aspect Malygos that are stored in an ancient magical artifact that the former Aspect Kalecgos finds buried deep in the remains of the Father of all Dragons, Galakrond. Part 1 did not have us meet the bronze Aspect, Nozdormu, however by the end of part 2 we do meet the Aspect of time, and future leader of the his flight.

Should All Classes Start at 55?

Ever since the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, and it’s Death Knight hero class, players have been begging for one thing: let all characters start at 55. At the time the cap was 80, and people said the first 60 levels were boring and no fun at all. Blizzard has done a lot to try to make things go smoothly for the average player. They have added Heirlooms, they have added xp bonuses, a better leveling experience, and more in an effort to hold onto the early 1-60 leveling process.

Tier Based Currency and Casual Playtime

I must admit, the Looking for Raid (LFR) has given me a new found interest in raiding. Of course, those are “easy mode” raids, set so easy that even the worst bad player can find success. Still, I have had the chance to experience the raid content in Mists more than I have in any other tier of raiding in the last 8 years. Until recently I worked shift work, so even if my guild had a raid group, the chance of my being able to participate would be rare and infrequent. One week I could work until 9 pm and not be home until 10:30 central time, and the next I could start at 9 am and be home at 6:30. Makes it hard to be a part of a normal or hard mode raid tea and feel like anything but a carry through player.

Caging Azeroth – Easing the Pet Battle curve

I have spent a fair bit of time doing pet battling, and there is one thing that has always been a pet peeve of mine through the entire process. If I am battling and capture a rare pet, the pet maintains close to the same level as what you tamed. At most you learn it 2 levels lower, which is a set of pet battle dailies from max level. However, if I learn a per from an item, or a reward from an achievement or quest, the pet is learned as a level 1, and often uncommon quality, even if the item you learned it from was rare in quality.

Hypocrisy in the Kirin’Tor

I was thinking back to working on the Operation: Shieldwall dailies with my alt, who had just visited with Jaina and Anduin in Dalaran. I was thinking about Jaina’s explanation at the time of why the Kirin Tor needed to remain neutral. She explained that the organization had many instances when their members had done horrible things. So, here is what I am wondering: what then gives the Kirin Tor the right to murder members of the Sunreavers when only a few of them were part of the theft of the Divine Bell?

Cataclysm Unresolved

Cataclysm was a very necessary expansion in many people’s eyes. It had a revamped leveling experience from 1-60 and it saw us finally face off against a dragon who has tormented mortals since the time of the Sundering. There was, though, a lot of stuff that was very much left unfinished.

Need Versus Want: A Debate of Content and Gear

The subject of this article is one that has been a bone of contention for as long as I have played World of Warcraft. It breaks down to the issue of folks wanting to do what they want to do. However, there seems to be a perceived connection from one aspect of the game to another. People seem to be connecting dailies to raiding, either due to the Valor or Lesser Charms that are provided from the daily quests in the game.

Some people have argued in the community, through forums and Twitter, that in order to raid they need to do dailies. The logic seems to be that in order to get the gear that you need to run raids, you need to do dailies to earn the rep and Valor needed to buy the gear. This belief is so widely held that one would almost think is it a clear and obvious fact by now. Why don’t we look at this, shall we?
