Creating our own obstacles

I was listening to a podcast, the awesome Epic Dolls podcast, and they were talking about how well we know our WoW friends. One of the hosts made the comment that she knows all of these people, but she pointed out all the things she doesn’t know about the people she knows in game.  Maybe this is just me, but this outlook is a bit odd to my mind. I do t understand why you would seek out differences instead of looking for the strands that connect and the main one I know is that we all love WoW!

I admit that, like the host, I do not know my guild masters last name, and in fact most of my guildies I do not know much about beyond their in game personality,  but for me, for my guild, we are like a family. I know the family problems that one guildie is having, I know the stresses at the job of another guildie, and I recently helped advise a guildie on a deeply personal issue. Do I know their last name, employer, and have checked three references? No because they are my friends not my business associates.

This brings me to the theme of this post, that of the theory that dome of us try too hard to find differences, spend too much time creating false distances, and ignore the connections that bring us together, draw us close, and earn us the title of friend.

Perhaps the digital age has come to fast for some, or maybe people are hesitant after all the press given to those who abuse those connections to do terrible things, but I for one choose to embrace the connections. I do not see why we must force a distance between ourselves and those we know in game and the mere idea of it baffles me to a degree.

“I don’t know x, y, and z about you” or “we aren’t real friends because we don’t hang out” are methods, to me, of pushing people away from you. “I know x, y, and z about you” and “how are you doing” and “I am here if you need to talk” are ways of connecting with people. I guess my question for you is whether you want to build relationships and connections, or distances and obstacles?

Linking Contest Update

I was just going to update the original post, but I decided there is enough in this update to warrant a whole new post. First, I want to extend my huge thanks to Jinx, who we are an affiliate of, for being kind enough to donate not one, but two gift codes for their site. While they don’t have our beloved talking plush murlocs in stock, and likely won’t for a few months(post blizzcon?) we now have a Winner and Runner up prize package! The first prize will be a $50 code for Jinx.com, and the second will be $25 for Jinx.com. So, at this point, we have the first prize as an Authenticator, a 60 day game card, the $50 gift code for Jinx.com, and a Fireworks trinket loot code. The second place prize is the $25 Jink.com code, and so far that is it.

If you wish to donate something to one or both of the prize packages, or know of a gamer/WoW related company that might be interested in donating, let us know at contests@allthingsazeroth.com and we will be more than happy to accept the donations and/or tips.

Now for my second update. I wanted to clarify, in case people are plotting, that we have very strong rules about spamming. If you spam our link to a site that is unrelated to the game, the entry will be disqualified. Likewise, if we get a report from a site or webmaster that our link has been spammed on their site, or their site has been hacked, or in any way brought harm to their site, you will have one strike before you will be out. Your entry will be disqualified, and any further reports will also disqualify you, and your other links will be thoroughly examined for legitimacy.

We are trying to promote the site, and the podcast, and we cannot do that by spamming people who couldn’t care less about WoW, gaming, or the podcast. Just as a final reminder, to have any entries included in the contest, you must link to us, and then email the link to contests@allthingsazeroth.com. If you twitter us, just click on your Twitter.com page the time stamp on the tweet, and that will link you to the full tweet url. If you have any questions, concerns, or spam reports, please feel free to email the contest address above and we will repond as quick as we can.

All Things Azeroth Linking Contest

We here at All Things Azeroth are launching a new contest tonight. The contest is one that will have you linking to us all over the internet. Your link should be this: All Things Azeroth, Your World of Warcraft Podcast, with a link to https://allthingsazeroth.com. These can be on your guild forums, your blog, WoW or gaming related forums, as long as it’s not spamming or against the rules of the forum. If you want to write your own words around the link, feel free to. If you create a site solely for this contest, it will be disqualified. There should be real, useful content at the site.

Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, and other social networking sites are also allowed to be used. If you twitter, an @allthingsaz is recommended, with a preferable #ata at the end. If you Facebook, a link to the site or to our Facebook fan page or group would be appreciated. Any other social networking sites, just link back to the ATA website. Once again, spamming will get you disqualified. If we hear from a webmaster, guild leader, or otherwise from someone complaining, we will disregard an entry.

In order to let us know about your submission, send us the url to the site you linked to us on. If you can include a screenshot, that would be even better. The winning link will have to be verified on submission and on completion of the contest. Links on the WoW forums are discouraged, and can get you banned or suspended from forum posting privileges, therefore use them at your own risk.

The prizes. The prize package may change as the contest progresses. Currently the prize for the winner will be a 60 day WoW game card and an Authenticator. More prizes may be added as the contest progresses. The contest will begin on Monday June 15, and submissions will be accepted until Sunday August 23rd at 12:00(noon) CDT. The winner will be drawn on Monday August 24th, and verified the same day. The winner(s) will be announced on the live show the evening of August 24th. Please stay tuned to the show, or the site for details as we get more prizes in. If you wish to donate a prize, email contests@allthingsazeroth.com.

Auctioning for Charity, an event for Child’s Play

We here at Dwight Wallbridge Productions are always happy to lend a hand to support good causes. Some of you may know I am a gamer as well as a photographer, and therefore a supported of the Child’s Play charity, started by the guys over at the Penny Arcade web comic. It’s a way for gamers to give back, to show the world there is more to us than a controller, avatar, character or title. Therefore when Brigwyn, over at The Hunter’s Lodge, twittered about his planned Child’s Play charity auction, an event to celebrate the World of Warcraft in game event Children’s Week, I knew right away I had to give what I could. For the photography side, I offered up an 8×10 print, unframed, of one of my collection, of course dependent of model release where applicable. On the podcasting side of the company(Dwight Wallbridge Productions) I offered up a one episode sponsorship. If you want to support Child’s Play, a great charity helping kids, and get a sponsorship of the show or a print of one of my photos, check out the eBay auctions. Also, be sure to check out all the other awesome stuff being donated!
