All Things Azeroth began in 2004 as the show Midweek Review on WoW Radio, where it lived for many months. Eventually it moved to a more content specific show and transformed into Know Your Role also on WoW Radio. Around the time of the first Blizzcon, the show moved over to a short stint on MMO Radio, before going on to launch as an independent podcast. The Know Your Role podcast was short lived, due to a variety of problems. In the time leading up to the launch of Burning Crusade, Medros, the host, was approached by some long time fans to relaunch the project under a new name, and new style.

All Thing Azeroth had it's first episode released in the hours leading up to the release of Burning Crusade, launching on January 15th, 2007. The first cohost was Lelia, a member of the guild Medros belonged to. Later co hosts would be Sardrissa, and Alyviel, before the current co host was offered the job, Graece. The first episode with Graece as the new co host was the Blizzcon 08 show, covering the news out of the opening ceremony. Two National Podcast Post Months, Two years, and innumerable rough starts, this is All Things Azeroth, Your World of Warcraft Podcast.

Why 3.2 may not speed up leveling

By Medros

The patch 3.2 PTR is up, and there is alot being said about the changes to the mount system. Most people I know with toons still in Outlands are very excited about how fast they can level through Outlands once they can fly out there. I have to say, though, that I am not so sure. I have a few reasons for this perspective, primary being what I call incidental xp. This is all that xp you get from mobs you kill while traveling.

The big change I refer to is the fact that you can learn slow flight at level 60, as compared to the level 70 that you need to learn both speeds of flight. This is a cool change, along with the many other mount changes that are coming in this patch, of that I have no doubt, but I think this will negatively impact on the leveling players. Let me put this plainly: you get a quest from NPC bob and you need to travel a little ways away, kill 5 mobs, and bring back a piece of the mobs armor.

Currently you kill 10 mobs on the way to the target and 3 more on the way back. Let's say that each mob gives 1500 xp per kill. That is about 20,000 xp. Now in 3.2 you will kick up on your bird, fly to the target mob area and killing, then flying back to the quest giver. That is now 20,000 or so xp you have just lost out on. Multiply that by a dozen or even a hundred quests, and you begin to see a major slowdown in levelling.

'But Medros', you may say, 'won't this be the same for the other travel changes in 3.2?' My best guess is no it will not. The difference is that flight takes you over and out of range of the mobs on the ground, while even an epic land mount will not avoid the possibility of being dazed off your mount and forcing you to fight against your desire. So while you can ride really fast past your mobs starting at 40 once 3.2 hits, you will not be able to completely avoid fighting those mobs like we will be able to in Outlands when the patch hits.

The definite benefit to these travel changes is, for instance, that you can now get rep discounts on mounts and training, which will likely save me roughly 3,000g between all the toons who still need to buy riding skills. Whether the benefits will outweigh the downsides, it's impossible to say, and I think we will not really know until we see the patch hit and compare the duration of leveling now compared to then. I for one am interested in seeing what real, live gameplay will turn out like. What do you think the flying changes and mount changes will do for the game? Found a flaw in my logic or math? Leave a comment below!

Addressing an issue

By Medros

I have received some comments, both in email and via Twitter, about a sponsorship we ran on the podcast episode 118. There seems to be some concern about the ethics and the reasoning behind this sponsor. First, let me say that the sponsor, and no I don't mean Go To My PC, will not be returning to the show. This was a trial balloon of sorts, and I have decided it is not in the interests of the show to continue this sponsorship. Let me assure you, your dissatisfaction has been heard, and will continue to be heard when you dislike a sponsor we bring on board.

Second, I will simply say I did thorough research, and found numerous licensed, legal businesses from around the world who offer the services this sponsor does, and therefore I felt this was not likely to be an illegal, fraudulent, or otherwise unwelcome business. Perhaps this was not the right venue for the sponsor, but I did not view this as a highly controversial sponsor, which it turned out to be. If you are an educator, parent, or otherwise took offence to the sponsor, I assure you that All Things Azeroth, Your World of Warcraft podcast is a safe place to tune in.

Lastly, I ask that if ever you have an issue with a sponsor, or a topic you hear talked about on the show, feel free to email me, or the show in general, to let us know what you think. This is, after all, Your World of Warcraft Podcast, so we want your input, feedback, and help to make this the best podcast it can be, and the most beneficial one for you. Thank you again for continuing to listen to All Things Azeroth.

Creating our own obstacles

By Medros

I was listening to a podcast, the awesome Epic Dolls podcast, and they were talking about how well we know our WoW friends. One of the hosts made the comment that she knows all of these people, but she pointed out all the things she doesn't know about the people she knows in game.  Maybe this is just me, but this outlook is a bit odd to my mind. I do t understand why you would seek out differences instead of looking for the strands that connect and the main one I know is that we all love WoW!

I admit that, like the host, I do not know my guild masters last name, and in fact most of my guildies I do not know much about beyond their in game personality,  but for me, for my guild, we are like a family. I know the family problems that one guildie is having, I know the stresses at the job of another guildie, and I recently helped advise a guildie on a deeply personal issue. Do I know their last name, employer, and have checked three references? No because they are my friends not my business associates.

This brings me to the theme of this post, that of the theory that dome of us try too hard to find differences, spend too much time creating false distances, and ignore the connections that bring us together, draw us close, and earn us the title of friend.

Perhaps the digital age has come to fast for some, or maybe people are hesitant after all the press given to those who abuse those connections to do terrible things, but I for one choose to embrace the connections. I do not see why we must force a distance between ourselves and those we know in game and the mere idea of it baffles me to a degree.

"I don't know x, y, and z about you" or "we aren't real friends because we don't hang out" are methods, to me, of pushing people away from you. "I know x, y, and z about you" and "how are you doing" and "I am here if you need to talk" are ways of connecting with people. I guess my question for you is whether you want to build relationships and connections, or distances and obstacles?

Linking Contest Update

By Medros

I was just going to update the original post, but I decided there is enough in this update to warrant a whole new post. First, I want to extend my huge thanks to Jinx, who we are an affiliate of, for being kind enough to donate not one, but two gift codes for their site. While they don't have our beloved talking plush murlocs in stock, and likely won't for a few months(post blizzcon?) we now have a Winner and Runner up prize package! The first prize will be a $50 code for Jinx.com, and the second will be $25 for Jinx.com. So, at this point, we have the first prize as an Authenticator, a 60 day game card, the $50 gift code for Jinx.com, and a Fireworks trinket loot code. The second place prize is the $25 Jink.com code, and so far that is it.

If you wish to donate something to one or both of the prize packages, or know of a gamer/WoW related company that might be interested in donating, let us know at contests@allthingsazeroth.com and we will be more than happy to accept the donations and/or tips.

Now for my second update. I wanted to clarify, in case people are plotting, that we have very strong rules about spamming. If you spam our link to a site that is unrelated to the game, the entry will be disqualified. Likewise, if we get a report from a site or webmaster that our link has been spammed on their site, or their site has been hacked, or in any way brought harm to their site, you will have one strike before you will be out. Your entry will be disqualified, and any further reports will also disqualify you, and your other links will be thoroughly examined for legitimacy.

We are trying to promote the site, and the podcast, and we cannot do that by spamming people who couldn't care less about WoW, gaming, or the podcast. Just as a final reminder, to have any entries included in the contest, you must link to us, and then email the link to contests@allthingsazeroth.com. If you twitter us, just click on your Twitter.com page the time stamp on the tweet, and that will link you to the full tweet url. If you have any questions, concerns, or spam reports, please feel free to email the contest address above and we will repond as quick as we can.

All Things Azeroth Linking Contest

By Medros

We here at All Things Azeroth are launching a new contest tonight. The contest is one that will have you linking to us all over the internet. Your link should be this: All Things Azeroth, Your World of Warcraft Podcast, with a link to http://www.allthingsazeroth.com. These can be on your guild forums, your blog, WoW or gaming related forums, as long as it's not spamming or against the rules of the forum. If you want to write your own words around the link, feel free to. If you create a site solely for this contest, it will be disqualified. There should be real, useful content at the site.

Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, and other social networking sites are also allowed to be used. If you twitter, an @allthingsaz is recommended, with a preferable #ata at the end. If you Facebook, a link to the site or to our Facebook fan page or group would be appreciated. Any other social networking sites, just link back to the ATA website. Once again, spamming will get you disqualified. If we hear from a webmaster, guild leader, or otherwise from someone complaining, we will disregard an entry.

In order to let us know about your submission, send us the url to the site you linked to us on. If you can include a screenshot, that would be even better. The winning link will have to be verified on submission and on completion of the contest. Links on the WoW forums are discouraged, and can get you banned or suspended from forum posting privileges, therefore use them at your own risk.

The prizes. The prize package may change as the contest progresses. Currently the prize for the winner will be a 60 day WoW game card and an Authenticator. More prizes may be added as the contest progresses. The contest will begin on Monday June 15, and submissions will be accepted until Sunday August 23rd at 12:00(noon) CDT. The winner will be drawn on Monday August 24th, and verified the same day. The winner(s) will be announced on the live show the evening of August 24th. Please stay tuned to the show, or the site for details as we get more prizes in. If you wish to donate a prize, email contests@allthingsazeroth.com.
