Announcing the Third Host

Before the announcement, I want to thank all of those who expressed interest, and considered the chance to join ATA. I do hope we will see some segment creators and round table guests come from many of you who sent in emails. You are all great folks, and it was really a struggle between Rho and I to decide on the person to fill in this third spot on the show.

When I was informed by Shade that she would have to leave the show or find those mysterious and elusive extra hours in the day, I struggled for awhile to think about who might be a good fit for the show. I knew that much like other podcasts, I would need to fill Shade’s shoes with 2 hosts, because let’s be honest, Shade is just that incredible. I hope we can see her on ATA again soon in a guest host role at least once or twice.

After the time spent working with Rho for the MoP launch event, I was pretty sure I knew I had in him someone who was passionate about WoW and the podcasting community surrounding it, what with the Realm Maintenance podcast being such a quick hit in the community. When it came to the second person, though, it was a bit trickier. I thought of a few people, but all of them had prior obligations, or like Shade, had no time, to do a show.

Last week, on episode number 318, we had on a guest who Rho was familiar with, and who had video and podcast experience. Also, she brought a level of experience in the game that is hard to match. I hope you will all join me in welcoming Nananea to the show as the third host of the new era of All Things Azeroth.

The “An end is a beginning” Intro Contest!

Tonight we had Shade’s final episode of ATA, and announced one of the new Co Hosts, Rho of the Realm Maintenance podcast. While we are deeply saddened to see Shade move on to bigger and better things, and hope we can see her back on occasion to talk WoW, we welcome Rho and a future decided second co-host with open arms and look forward to covering the great news in the wide World of Warcraft we all love.

With Shade’s departure, many, if not all of our old intros are now out of date, and we will need new ones to fit the new crew. So, we thought, why not do a contest and give out some awesome prizes! The way we will do this contest will be a bit different, with a little bit different way of doing prizes. Please email your entries to show@allthingsazeroth.com

The number of entries we have will decide what prizes we have to give out. If we have 5 entries, the prizes available to be won will be a Pearl of Pandaria graphic novel and a WoW battle chest, to separate winners. If we have 10 entries, we will add in a Chen megabloks for a third winner. If we have 15 intros entered, we will bump it up just a bit to add in a Mists of Pandaria Collector’s Edition! We do ask you keep your intros to 2 minutes or less, and the winners will be decided by the crew based on quality.

While we have not decided on the third slot for the show, we hope to announce this soon, so if you want to hold off on final submission until we do, feel free. The tentative deadline for entries will be December 10th, though we may extend if needed. Thank you for your entries, and we look forward to bringing you some really amazing and fun shows going forward!

Back in My Day… We Needed a Pole to Fish With!

There are many things that a player can do in World of Warcraft. One of the things you can do is go fishing. It seems to me that very few players would identify fishing as one of their favorite things to do in Azeroth. Many people find it really boring! Personally, I find fishing in WoW to be relaxing. This is especially true if I am fishing on a day when my allergies were bad enough to require me to take prescription allergy medication.

The arrival of patch 5.0.4 brought a (somewhat) interesting change to fishing. You no longer need to actually have a fishing pole in your possession in order to fish. Click the little icon that shows a worm on a hook, and a simplistic fishing pole will magically appear.

It took me a while to realize that this change had occurred. Like many of you, who have been playing WoW since “Vanilla”, I’d gotten used to the idea that I couldn’t fish without a fishing pole. I always had one in my bag, and would automatically go equip it before I tried to fish. So, that’s what I did. Back in my day… we needed a fishing pole to fish with!

It wasn’t until “Pirate Day” that I accidentally realized that I no longer needed to equip a fishing pole in order to fish. One of my alts, a Dwarven Priest named Bradenna, was done hanging out with the pirates and needed something else to do that might help her level.

She never had a fishing pole, but I didn’t remember. I clicked the fishing icon, and she started fishing – despite not having a pole. Instead, she was holding her staff in the manner that one would hold a fishing pole. There was a bobber I could click on, but no fishing line connecting it to the non-existent pole. I figure this was a glitch, and have not seen it happen after that day. Instead, my toons are using a twig that they found at the side of the lake as a pole.

There are advantages to not needing a fishing pole anymore. Few things were more annoying than being in a situation where you wanted to do some fishing, but had no fishing pole to equip. You couldn’t fish without it! This meant heading for your bank to get the pole and then going all the way back to where you wanted to fish at. In the days before flying mounts, this was very time consuming!

The alternative was to constantly carry your fishing pole with you, and let it take up bag space. This posed another problem when your bags filled up while you were out killing stuff. Not needing a fishing pole gives you one more empty bag slot that you can fill with something more valuable.

How many of you have forgotten to equip your weapon and/or shield after you got done fishing? That next mob of monsters you ran into seemed a lot more difficult than you expected them to be. Oh, right… it’s because you are bopping them head with your fishing pole, instead of stabbing them with an actual weapon! This new change means that there will be fewer people running around a battleground, blissfully unaware that their weapon is actually a fishing pole that they forgot about.

Following the Pugs

I tend to be very easily distracted by random things as I am playing WoW. For example, whenever I find a pug dog running around, I follow it. Where is it going? Why is it going there? Where in Azeroth is the owner of the pug? This is a concise explanation as to why I don’t have any characters that are max level. You don’t earn any experience points by following around random, cute, pets.

Who could resist a face like that?

Otto von Chubbs belongs to a little human girl named Dylan. Her house is located just outside of Stormwind City, out by the lake.

Every so often, Dylan will turn and run around the back of the house, and then return to this spot. Her faithful pug, Otto von Chubbs, follows her until it is time to run around the house again. Perhaps Dylan has found a way to pass the time until her parents return home. Absolutely no one is inside her house!

Fei Fei belongs to Warrant Officer Tracy Proudwell. You can find them both in Honor Hold, in Helfire Peninsula. According to WoWWiki, Fei Fei started out life as a darkly colored wolf, but was changed into a Perky Pug in patch 4.0.1. There is a quest called Digging for Prayer Beads that Fei Fei is involved with.

Crithto was added to the game in Patch 4.0.6. This is the pug I used to happily follow around Stormwind City as he traveled along the canals between the Dwarven District and Stormwind Keep. He moved really fast, preventing me from getting a good screenshot of him.

In Patch 5.0.4, Crithto became a level 91 Elite pug, (that is attackable by both Horde and Alliance). He now can be found running up and down the hallways inside Stormwind Keep, just as fast as ever. His path now takes him around in a circle through the castle gardens and up and down the hallways nearby it.

Crithto is named after the Community team member of the same name, whose avatar on the WoW forums is of a Perky Pug. You can see in the screenshots I took that Crithro was carrying a bone in his mouth. I’ve heard he can also spawn wearing a bow on his head, or a fez (but I haven’t seen it myself yet).
