What Have They Done to My Totems?

My Elemental Shaman, Zoeie, is not at all pleased with the changes to the Shaman totems. She’s over there either screaming in frustration, or singing The Lament of the Totem-less Shaman. I’m certain the lyrics to this (non-existent) song would go something like this:

“What have they done to my totems?
I used to have four, but they are no more.
Why, why, WHY?”

This week, I have been spending most of my “game-playing time”, (what little I have), in Diablo III. This probably doesn’t surprise anyone who listens to Shattered Soulstone. I absolutely love D3. However, this does not mean that I have stopped playing World of Warcraft. Every so often, something motivates me to log in, run around Azeroth, and find something that amuses me for a while.

Recently, I heard that patch 5.0.4 included some changes that weren’t very nice to Shaman. Rumor had it that the totems were gone. This distressed me greatly. After all, what is a Shaman without her totems?

Those sparkly, glowing, fonts of mana and destruction were the most impressive part of being a Shaman. Get into a battle. Pop! Four totems at the same time! Whatcha gonna do against that? Um… ok, probably try and kill the totems as fast as you can. But still, they looked all kinds of awesome while they were up. Take a look at Zoeie fighting Ganz’rilla.

She’s got four totems, all at the same time, surrounding her. One totem throws a fireball at the monster, while a second one is generating mana. Another totem is ready to “eat” the first spell thrown at me, and the fourth one is making me a little bit stronger. One click, and I was ready to take on dragons!

Then, 5.0.4 hit. It included wording that sounded rather ominous:

“Shaman: Totems no longer provide long-term buffs. Some of the old passive effects are now innately provided by the shaman. Totems instead have short-term situational benefits. In light of this the totem multidrop UI has been removed, through all totem spells are now sorted under draggable elemental flyouts in the Spellbook.”

After trying out the new changes for a while, I managed to figure out how to have three totems appear at the same time, (but still can’t figure out how to get the fourth one). The difference is that I have to click each one manually, and that their duration has gotten shorter. The new configuration does not look as impressive as it used to.

I miss my Mana Spring totem already. Where did it go? I’m hoping it’s in the Spellbook, somewhere, and that I somehow didn’t see it. It is going to take me a while to retrain my hands to click several different buttons for totems after being so used to clicking “one button to rule them all”. Eventually, I will get used to this change, just like I have gotten used to all the other changes in WoW since “Vanilla”. Right now, though, I miss the vivid visual representation of what it means to be a Shaman.

Watermarking: Why I am not Worried

The big uproar among some WoW players this week is the revelation, (made a couple of days ago), that Blizzard places hidden watermarking in screen shots taken in WoW. According to the site that published the discovery, these watermarks can show Blizzard “our character’s account name/id, the time of the screenshot and the the full information of the realm, including its IP address”, and they highlight in bright red after the last one “(think ‘private servers’)”. Yup, private, or illegal, servers. In other words, servers that are stealing Blizzard’s copyrighted works, and their Intellectual Property, for their own uses. We’ll get more into that later.

Expanding Pandaren lore with Pearl of Pandaria

Blizzard recently sent me a review copy of the upcoming graphic novel Pearl of Pandaria. I must say I was not sure what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised by what came in a deceptively thin looking book. Written by Mickey Neilson, auther of the Ashbringer comic, several short stories in the WoW universe, and co writer of the Curse of the Worgen comic series, and illustrated by Sean “Cheeks” Galloway, whose artist credits span more universes than I could count.

Pearl of Pandaria tells the story of Li Li Stormstout, niece of the legendary hero Chen Stormstout. She ventures from Shen-zin Su, the Wandering Isle, in search of the adventure that the letters from her uncle were full of, following the legacy of the first resident of the giant turtle, Liu Lang. In her travels, Li Li is accompanied reluctantly with Strongbo, her uncle’s long ago best friend, who Li Li’s father sends after she leaves in the middle of the night, and who is a gloomy storm cloud to her adventurer spirit and excitement of discovery.

In her travels, Li Li is stalked by mysterious agents in search of a powerful artifact, the Pearl of Pandaria. While we find out little about the Pearl itself, we get the chance to follow the exciting adventures of Li Li and Bo as they follow clues in search of the mysterious whereabouts of Chen Stormstout. This leads to the confrontational peak of the story.

The story is very well told, and the art is a style I have not seen before from any of the Blizzard graphic novels or comics, which usually followed more typical art styles. However, I think the style really fits with the new isle of Pandaria, and look forward to more stories and perhaps more art in this style in the future.

There were a few things in the story that confused me, as the placement of events and characters put the passage of time in this novel and placement in the timeline a bit fuzzy, though I would guess it was before the Nightmare war found in the Stormrage novel. I still enjoyed the story, and loved the retelling of encounters with Chen from several characters he met in his time, from the ones covering mass consumption of alcohol, to the ones where Chen is his usual kick arse self. A thoroughly fun read!

The Pearl of Pandaria graphic novel releases September 25th. Look for the interview of the writer and artist of this novel on episode 310 of All Things Azeroth.
